Overview of SAGHS 2022
In November 2022, President Cyril Ramaphosa convened the Inaugural SA Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. The gathering was addressed by the leaders from South Africa’s public and private sectors, representatives of foreign governments and experts in green hydrogen and sustainable energy. The event marked the emergence of a new industrial sector for South Africa’s economy and drew participants from South Africa, other African countries and international trade, development and financial partners.
Southern Africa’s rich platinum metal wealth; abundant wind and solar energy; and substantial knowledge and industrial base position South Africa to participate in the global demand for green hydrogen as an important part of the global commitment to decarbonisation. As the global demand for sustainably produced green hydrogen grows, the inaugural summit showcased new partnerships to create jobs and help drive South Africa’s Just Energy Transition.
